“The Cameroon government today murdered Dr. Chemuta Divine Banda in Yaoundé,” a close associate of the deceased has told AmbaNews24, May 18, 2020, on condition of anonymity for security reasons.
Dr. Banda was the Chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms. He has been at the helm of this Commission since 2003.
The murdered victim led the inquiry into the Ngarbuh massacre of thirteen Ambazonian children and many others on February 14, 2020. He determined and made public in his report that the Cameroun military was responsible for the killings.
The report drew and continues to draw significant international criticism against the Cameroun government, and has brought to the forefront the unimaginable levels of human rights violations and genocide being committed daily by the Cameroun government on the people of Ambazonia. On the day of Dr. Abanda’s assassination, for example, Amb. Tibor Nagy, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Affairs twitted: “Government killing of civilians in #Cameroon, is inexcusable. I urge follow-through on Ngarbuh investigation and many other incidents of this nature….”
Speaking to AmbaNews24 from Douala, an associate of the murdered victim said on condition of anonymity: “Four days ago, he [Dr. Banda] told me he has been receiving threats from government officials because of the Ngarbuh massacre report. He specifically mentioned Paul Atanga Nji and Lele L’Afrique in Bamenda.”
“He said Atanga Nji asked him if he understood what it means to betray the military of the State,” the said associate continued, “and that when the moment comes he will see where his international community will be to protect him.”
Another friend of the murdered Human Rights and Freedom chief in Yaoundé has also told AmbaNews24: “We knew it was only a matter of time. This government is targeting Anglophones in the system, and many more will die. They will blame all the killings on Corona virus. Who do you think killed Joseph Mbah Ndam of the SDF? Was it not because an audio recording leaked that he had been giving money to one Irene Ngwa in America for some Amba boys? We either fight now and be free forever, or we will forever be killed one after the other by Cameroun.”
A family member of the deceased in Bamenda, speaking in tears, has contested the narrative that Dr. Banda died from the Corona virus. “He had no fever, shortness of breath, headache, lost of taste or anything close to that virus infection. After his last back surgery in Switzerland, he has never complained of anything close to corona virus till today when he died suddenly at the clinic from what we believe was poison.”
By killing Ambazonians and claiming that they are dying of Corona virus, the Cameroun government gives itself reason to enforce a quick burial of the victims without an autopsy that can determine the true cause of their death. They are using Corona virus as cover up so that there will be no autopsy to prove the true assassination of Ambazonians still serving in the Cameroun government.
Dr. Banda hailed from Bafut, Nforya in Ambazonia’s state of Mezam. Before becoming head of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms, he worked at the Cameroun Embassy in Holland. He was a founding member of Unics Bank, Cameroon, and had held its Chairmanship.
